Based in Bausen, a small village in the Aranese Pyrenees at an altitude of 930 metres, Es Sarnalhèrs is a research, transmission and contemporary creation association dedicated to the living heritage of the Val d'Aran.
At the crossroads of ethnology, contemporary art and cultural action, the association works to safeguard, document, promote and transmit the cultural, natural, tangible and intangible heritage of the territory.
Its activities are rooted in fieldwork combining the collection of oral histories, the documentation of traditional knowledge and practices, ethnographic research, publications, artist residencies and cultural mediation projects.
Among its main transmission tools are the multilingual collection Pinta eth tòn patrimòni, which transforms the results of its research into an accessible and intergenerational format, and SOLSTICI, a multidisciplinary journal dedicated to the relationships between cultural practices linked to the solstices, contemporary creation and natural cycles.
The association also develops two complementary spaces:
TELA, an open-air laboratory exploring the relationships between culture, agriculture and landscape; and
VIVA, a research-creation residency fostering dialogue between artists, researchers and local communities.
Guided by the principle «Conéisher entà Estimar, Estimar entà Defensar» ("To know in order to love, to love in order to protect"), the association considers knowledge to be an essential condition for the preservation and transmission of heritage. Its work is part of a broader reflection on contemporary transformations in mountain regions, the challenges related to intangible cultural heritage, and the relationships between memory, territory and creation.
Our activities began informally in 2013 before officially becoming a non-profit association in 2018.
